Introducing Alan Cumming’s Paradise Homes, a new show celebrating inspiring design and daylight on Mondays from 12th February at 8pm on HGTV and stream on discovery+.

Alan Cumming’s Paradise Homes is an enchanting, fantasy-filled property series proudly sponsored by VELUX, that tells the story about some incredible homes around the world which all celebrate the beauty of natural light. Fuelled by his secret passion for architecture, Scottish big screen star, Alan Cumming, is let loose inside eleven unique properties. He meets the inspiring creators who have designed and constructed the home of their dreams; from a glass fronted waterside retreat on a tiny Swedish island, to a family home built above a cave in Sicily lit by roof windows and a glasshouse on the Sound of Mull in Scotland. Across five episodes, this series allows Alan to snoop around each property discovering what really makes a home, paradise.

I myself have renovated complete shells into homes a couple of times and so know the feeling satisfaction of living somewhere that is exactly the way I wanted it in every way.  But it’s never an easy process and I really admire people who take the plunge and build their own dream home, either from scratch or as a renovation – especially when they’re in remote places, and that’s why I have loved being involved with this new series.

“It was so fun to meet the homeowners, to find out how they turned their dreams into reality and to be invited to experience their idea of paradise with them. What this programme revealed to me is that what makes a new build or renovation truly successful is not actually about the house at all, it’s about the how happy the people who made it are living in it. That's the real definition of a home.”

Alan Cumming

Alan Cumming's Paradise Homes celebrates the role daylight plays in home renovations around the globe. It has been fantastic to see how in each of the eleven homes, the owners’ favourite places are spots bathed in natural light. From staring up to the stars from bed, to soaking up the sky from the bath, the homeowners have elegantly used roof windows to help create their paradise homes with fresh air and daylight.”

Most of the homes in the show are far removed from urban life, with the owners often relocating for exactly that reason. The notion of paradise has a sense of escapism, with many properties designed to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor. Sustainability goes hand in hand with celebrations of nature, fresh air and daylight in each of these slices of personal paradise. Family is also a recurring priority for the projects, with many designed to welcome guests and loved ones of all ages.
